Continuous Change and Discrete Event Modeling

Continuous change is typical in the majority of processes, so modeling a large, complex process can be a daunting task. Discrete event modeling is the process of depicting the behavior of a complex system as a series of well-defined and ordered events and works well in virtually any process where there is variability, constrained or limited resources or complex system interactions.

Features and Advantages

Discrete event simulation allows you to quickly analyze a process or system’s behavior over time, ask yourself “why” or "what if" questions, and design or change processes or systems without any financial implications.

Arena Discrete Event Simulation Software features:

  • Flowchart modeling methodology includes a large library of pre-defined building blocks to model your process without the need for custom programming
  • Complete range of statistical distribution options to accurately model process variability
  • Ability to define object paths and routes for simulation
  • Statistical analysis and report generation
  • Performance metrics and dashboards
  • Realistic 2D and 3D animation capabilities to visualize results beyond numbers

Arena Discrete Event Simulation Software advantages:

  • Improve visibility into the effect of a system or process change
  • Explore opportunities for new procedures or methods without disrupting the current system
  • Diagnose and fix problems
  • Reduce or eliminate bottlenecks
  • Reduce operating costs
  • Improve financial forecasting
  • Better assess hardware and software requirements
  • Reduce delivery times
  • Better manage inventory levels, personnel, communications systems, and equipment
  • Increase profitability through overall improved operations

Understanding the Potential Impact of Business Process Decisions Before They are Made

Business processes reside in every type of organization, regardless of size or industry. If they are clearly defined and optimized on a regular basis, they will undoubtedly contribute to your company’s overall success and profitability. Simulating or modeling a specific business process gives you the ability to analyze and make decisions on how to improve that process. Through business process modeling software, you can achieve results well before any financial repercussions arise from your decisions.

Arena business process simulation software allows you to create these business process models, arming you with the intelligence needed to reduce costs, measure performance, and optimize your business operations. Its ease of use, flexibility, and scalability will help you model any aspect of your enterprise. Active dashboard reporting tools enhance presentations and will help you make the best decisions without requiring additional time, resources, or capital investments—before your decisions impact your bottom line.

Business process simulation provides the ability to answer the following questions:

  • How can we achieve our performance objectives?
  • When should we increase or reduce resources?
  • What will be the impact of making this operational change?
  • How can I demonstrate my findings to the organization?

Business process modeling provides the ability to:

  • Graphically present process flows for even the most complex of business processes
  • Monitor, analyze, and better understand process behavior and workflows
  • Better predict a new design or system’s performance, response times, and bottlenecks
  • Evaluate the impact of failure rates
  • Change or improve the way systems are configured and tasks are performed
  • Create models to depict a better way of carrying out specific processes
  • Test alternatives to determine which are best for the business
  • Demonstrate results both visually and quantitatively to enhance acceptance and understanding of decisions

Arena

Minimum System Requirements

  • Arena® software, version 16.20.02
  • FactoryTalk® Activation Manager 5.00.12
  • Hard drive with 2GB free disk space (or more)
  • 8GB RAM (or more)
  • Intel® dual-core processor (or more), 3GHz (or faster)
  • Microsoft Office® (to view the new model statistics report Excel spreadsheet).

Note: Arena supports Microsoft 365 Apps for Enterprise, Office 2016/2019/2021 (Consumer Version2009 or later). Other versions of Office, for example Office Pro Plus 2019 C2R, are not officially supported but may work with the installation of Access 2013 Runtime.

Recommended System Requirements

  • Arena® software, version 16.20.02
  • Hard drive with 4GB free disk space (or more)
  • 16GB RAM (or more)
  • Intel® dual-core processor (or more), 3GHz (or faster)
  • Internet access for installing FactoryTalk activations

Graphics Configuration

Minimum Requirements

  • Graphics card should have 512MB or more of dedicated DDR3 type or better memory.

Below are example graphics cards that meet the minimum requirements:

  • NVIDIA Quadro NVS 160M or better
  • NVIDIA NVS 3100M or better
  • NVIDIA Quadro PCI-E Series or better
  • NVIDIA GeForce GTX 295 or better

Note: Arena Visual Designer performance is dependent upon the OpenGL and graphics card drivers installed on your computer. Early versions of some graphics card drivers contain issues that can cause Arena Visual Designer to not render graphics properly or generate runtime errors. It is strongly recommended to visit your graphics card vendor's web site to obtain the latest version of your graphics card driver.

Recommended Requirements

  • Microsoft DirectX 9.0 and OpenGL 2.0 compatible
  • Pixel and Vertex Shaders 2.0 compatible
  • At least a 2GB GDDR5 (Graphics Double Data Rate, version 5) SGRAM; this is a high-performance graphics card. Any graphics card that can be used for extreme gaming will generally fit these criteria

Operating Systems

Arena is a Windows application that runs on both 32-bit and 64-bit operating systems. You must have Administrative privileges to install the software.

We support the following operating systems:

  • Microsoft Windows® 10 Pro/Enterprise
  • Microsoft Windows® 11 Pro/Enterprise
  • Windows® Server 2016

Note: Arena 32-bit can be installed on x64 versions of Windows and will run as a 32-bit application. Arena 64-bit will run as a 64-bit application on x64 versions of Windows.

The Arena software can be run on single processor, multi-processor, and multi-core processor computers.

If you have multiple licenses available, you can run more than one instance of Arena at a time on your computer by going to File>Options>Settings and selecting Enable Multiple Instances.

The Arena Visual Designer tool will take advantage of multi-core capability to maintain graphic update speed.
